The synagogue in the Cetate district (6 Mărășești street) is a Jewish place of worship built between 1863 and 1865 according to the plans of the architect Karl Schumann from Vienna. Built in an eclectic style with Moorish elements, the synagogue seats 744 people. The synagogue was inaugurated on 19 September 1865 and re-inaugurated in 1872 by King Ferenc József, and served the Jewish community of the Neolog rite. After the massive emigration of Jews, the synagogue was closed, the Jewish Community of Timișoara transferred in 2001 the synagogue in the Cetate district to the Philharmonic Society for a period of 50 years.
It was reopened in September 2005 on the occasion of a concert organized by the Philharmonic Society of Timișoara. Currently, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania manages the synagogue again, and in May 2022 it will be reopened to the public following extensive restoration works. This year it was the scene of several concerts.
